Joshua Wilson is the community liaison for the Roy Howard Community Journalism Center at The University of Southern Mississippi, where he also serves as an adjunct professor in the School of Media and Communication. Additionally, he owns and operates a boutique marketing and public relations firm, Perch Creek Communications.
The native Mississippian started his career at 15 as a correspondent for his hometown newspaper. He is a two-time graduate of William Carey University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in social science and English as well as a Master of Business Administration degree. He also holds a graduate certificate in economic development from Southern Miss.
His ties to William Carey include years of service as an employee in its external relations unit, including time as director of media relations and marketing overseeing those activities for two campuses, a medical school, and a pharmacy program. He also served as an adjunct professor for the university.
Wilson has worked as a reporter and editor for several publications, including one of the state’s largest weekly newspapers, a regional lifestyles magazine, and the state’s premier business journal. Outside of journalism, he has headed marketing and public relations activities for organizations like the nation’s 12th-largest foodservice distributor.
He serves as chair of the board of directors for Innova Preparatory School and was marketing chair and treasurer of his local neighborhood association and its charitable foundation.
Wilson is a past president of the Pine Belt chapter of the Public Relations Association of Mississippi and served as an officer for the state organization. He also served as vice president of the College Public Relations Association of Mississippi and on the advisory council for the College Media Association.
He served on the executive committee of the Mississippi Pine Belt chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, also known as NAMI. He also volunteered with United Way of Southeast Mississippi as a member of their marketing and events committee.
Along with awards for his work from professional organizations such as CPRAM, the Mississippi Press Association, and PRAM, Wilson was recognized as a member of the 2015 “Top 20 Under 40” class by the Hattiesburg American.
He is the primary author of William Carey University: Celebrating 125 Years, published in 2017 as part of Arcadia Publishing’s Campus History Series. He is a contributing author to Memories of Lincoln County, published in 2020 by Outskirts Press.
